Xeriscape Gardens
Xeriscape is a word derived from the combination
of a Greek word "Xeros" meaning dry
and "scape" from the word "landscape."
By applying the principles of xeriscape, a
landscape can be beautiful and diverse while
using less water. Planning, improving soil
quality, choosing appropriate plants, and
proper watering, mulching and maintenance
all play a role in conserving water.
The seven principles of Xeriscape landscaping are not new; they have been practiced in the landscape industry for decades. The concept of combining all seven guidelines into one effort toward landscape water conservation is what makes Xeriscape landscaping unique.
- Planning and design - This is the foundation of any water-wise landscape.
- Soil analysis - This will determine whether soil improvement is needed for better water absorption and improved water-holding capacity.
- Practical turf areas - This suggests that turf grasses be used as a planned element in the landscape. Avoid impractical turf use, such as long, narrow areas.
- Appropriate plant selection - This will keep the landscape more in tune with the natural environment. Both native and exotic plants make up the huge variety of plants available for Xeriscape landscaping.
- Efficient irrigation - By not wasting water you can instantly save 30 to 50 percent on your water bill.
- Use of mulches - A great way to prevent water loss in flower and shrub beds through soil evaporation and to increase water penetration during irrigations.
- Appropriate maintenance - Preserves the beauty of the Xeriscape landscape plus saves water. Pruning, weeding, proper fertilization, pest control and irrigation system adjustments all conserve water.
By incorporating these seven principles, you can help preserve our most precious natural resource - water. Xeriscape landscapes need not be cactus and rock gardens. They can be green, vibrant landscapes full of beautiful plants maintained with water-efficient practices.
